Fishing the Waikato Hydro Lakes
The Waikato Hydro Lakes hold a lot of trout, with all of them giving you the chance of a trophy trout. A shared love of fishing was the motivation for the Waikato Hydro lakes Explorer tour—a trout fishing exploration of the Hydro Lakes
Who are the Trout Ticklers?
Most of the Trout Ticklers grew up a stone's throw from the Waikato Hydro Lakes or Lake Karapiro—but between Lake Karapiro and Lake Taupo are 6 other Lakes that we knew very little about, even though major roads cross or run parallel to many of them.
Fishing the Waikato Hydro Lakes is unlike any other experience, thanks to their scenic beauty and the abundance of trout found within. Each lake—from the quiet stretches of Lake Arapuni to the open waters of Lake Whakamaru—offers its own challenges and surprises. Whether you’re casting from the shore or drifting along in a small boat, the ever-changing landscapes and peaceful atmosphere create the perfect setting to enjoy a day on the water. It’s an opportunity not only to catch trout, but to connect with the natural heart of the Waikato region.
What really sets fishing on the Waikato Hydro Lakes apart is the sense of discovery that each outing brings. Local anglers often find themselves learning new techniques as they adapt to the different lake environments—whether it’s mastering soft-baiting around submerged trees or trying out trolling lures along long, open arms of deep water. The lakes are alive with birdsong and the occasional splash of a jumping trout, adding to a feeling of being immersed in the natural world. For many, it’s these moments of surprise and connection—seeing a kingfisher dart by or spotting a swirl on the water’s surface—that make the experience so memorable and keep them coming back to this special corner of the Waikato.
